Carolyn Burns, MD is a Board- Certified Pathologist (AP/CP) and served as Medical Director/Chief of Pathology of the Jewish Hospital Healthcare System, Dept. of Pathology in Louisville, KY. from 1991-2011. This included medical directorship of Surgical Pathology, Clinical Pathology, the Transfusion/ Tissue Services, and the Bloodless Medicine & Surgery Program for this 5-hospital system. She has previously been an Asst. Clinical Professor in the Dept. of Pathology @ the University of Louisville and on the Advisory Board and guest lecturer for the Bellarmine University Clinical Laboratory Science Program.
After earning her Microbiology undergraduate degree at the University of Kansas and her subsequent medical degree at the University of Missouri, Dr. Burns completed an internship in General Surgery followed by Pathology residency at the University of Louisville.
Dr. Burns is the current President for the Society for the Advancement of Patient Blood Management, having served as Secretary and Treasurer along with SABM Newsletter editor-in-chief. Dr. Burns is an active member of several medical societies including AABB, College of American Pathologists, and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. She is a board member for the Kentucky Association of Blood Banks and prior Chair for the River Valley Regional American Red Cross Medical Advisory Committee.
Dr. Burns is an experienced Patient Blood Management physician advisor/consultant working with numerous hospitals and systems throughout the U.S. She has delivered a multitude of educational seminars and keynote addresses on a wide range of PBM topics on the national and international stage.

Carolyn Clancy is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with her master’s degree as an Adult Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist from Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis, IN. She is Lean Six Sigma certified and has over 30 years of experience in healthcare with an acquired clinical expertise in trauma and non-trauma perioperative services, as a continuum of care, massive hemorrhage protocols for all populations, malignant hyperthermia, central reprocessing, and comprehensive patient blood management.
As a CNS, Carolyn excels at providing an integrated approach to healthcare optimization by impacting three primary areas within healthcare: the patient, the clinician, and the system/organization. She is a clinical expert and leader in healthcare anchoring nursing and healthcare practices with evidence-based science while mindfully managing resources necessary to attain safe, timely, high-quality, efficient, effective, ethical, patient centered care for all sizes of healthcare systems.
Carolyn has over a decade of experience in successful team effectiveness & leadership training and functions as a welcoming mentor, coach, clinical consultant, educator, and transformational system & organization change agent with a personal mission to provide exemplary collaborative leadership that continually drives healthcare forward; inspiring others to “always being better tomorrow than we are today.”
She has authored several publications and is a recognized mentor and speaker for change management, change leadership, PBM, perioperative care, and nursing education on the national and international stage.
